April 04 About ScarlettBob and I had been apart for about two and a half years and, I was living with my current boyfriend Michael. It broke my heart but, I knew Anna and Bob belonged together and I could never separate them. She was my dog but, he was her human. If I was to get another pet, I wanted to be able to love it for what it was and not as a replacement for Anna. As much as I love animals, I was probably too hard on myself making sure I didn’t develop any attachments. I even went as far as to giving away the kio that I had at the time. Two and a half years latter I was home alone (TRYING) to fix the sprinkler system in the back yard. It was about 2:30 pm I suddenly felt that I was ready to care for another dog, and I made a little wish. That night we had guests over and they had all had left by 1 am. About and hour latter Michael and I had just gone to bed when the phone began to ring. As far as I was concerned the caller could leave a message. Michael on the other hand; thinking there may be an emergency went to the living room. Minutes latter he was back explaining that it was Eric, one of our guest from earlier that night. He had just found a puppy in the middle of the street and could not bring it home. He wanted to know if we could take it for the night. I froze, I couldn’t speak, time and space did not exist beyond my own mind and, it was filled with the thought of wishes don‘t come true like this. Thirty minutes latter I got my first glimpse. There was not much light and shadows made it difficult to make out the ball of fur in Michael’s arm’s. Half of fear and half of excitement my first thought was it’s a Saint Bernard puppy. I have always been a big dog person and the prospect of a dog that big was over whelming. Something even more unexpected happened. The ball of fur looked up from under Michael’s arm and again reality evaporated. It wasn’t a Saint Bernard at all it was a little drop kick dog and as she looked me in the eyes it was as if she was speaking to me. I can still hear the words as clearly to day “Papa, I have been looking for you.” At that moment I fully understood what Bob had meant when he said that Anna had looked at him. The little dog was a mess. The bath water ran a muddy brown and she had more then a half inch of her own waist needed to be cut from her. An hour later clean and blow dried the ball of fur was sound asleep, perhaps the most sound that she was able to get for some time. How knows how long she had survived on the street. About Anna and BobBob is my former spouse, we lived together for eight years. One of our greatest highlights of our life together was Anna our dog. Bob was a cat person when we met and was not pleased to find out that I had been making arrangements to bring one into our life. Nor was he pleased about the potential size it could grow to be. Finally the day came when the puppies where old enough to be taken away from their mother. I could hardly contain my excitement as Bob drove in near silence. We had known Tom the breeder for quite some time and he was just as happy that I was getting one of his dogs, as I was to getting one. Tom took me to get to know the parent dogs in the back yard. The size of the father Leroy at nearly one hundred and fifty pound intimidated Bob so he chose to wait in the house. Considering the dog was twenty plus pounds heaver then him I could not blame him. Tom and I returned to the house a few minutes later. Bob’s demeanor had made a complete tern around. His eyes where wide and I had not seen his smile so big in weeks. He was unable to explain, only saying that she had looked at him. At that point I knew we where not getting out of there with out that smallish girl that was in contrast to the much larger boy that had peaked my interest. There was no denying that Bob and the puppy completely adored each other. The next day Bob learned that his cat had been poisoned and had to put him to sleep. I was working and going to school at the same time so it was Anna that helped Bob threw his loss and Bob helped Anna to grow strong and healthy. That was ten years ago and now we have had to help Anna and end her suffering. This was her second fight with cancer. We saved her the first time when she was almost six however, this time she was far too sick and at ten years old the risk of her not surviving the surgery was just as high. There is a photo of Bob and Anna on the beach in her album. This one photo sums up what the two of them shared. I will be posting more for her and for Bob but this one tell all. I love them both. |
